Definition of School Nursing

"School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self management, self advocacy, and learning."

In the Coweta County Department of School Health, the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. Many regulations and policies are in place within our school system to guide our decisions for the benefit of all of our students. Local policies are a direct reflection of the State of Georgia School Policies and Regulations. Other documents that assist us with reaching important health decisions are the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta School Health Manual which is used across the State of Georgia as a major resource for healthcare in our schools, our own Coweta County School Health Orientation Manual, based on the National Association of School Nurse position statements and guidelines, and our State of Georgia Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act.

Since 2000, Coweta County Schools have maintained a school nurse designated for each school campus. Each school clinic contains basic medical equipment to assess and or treat minor medical conditions that can occur during the course of a school day. Each Coweta County school clinic has access to a School Health trained Georgia licensed nurse. All schools in Coweta County have an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Each school nurse is trained in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of the AED.

Thank you for entrusting the care of your student to us.
